Nearly all antiscalant pretreatments marketed in the RO industry today are based on cooling tower and boiler scale inhibitor chemicals. Such technologies were originally designed for use in water systems having different temperatures, pressures, and surfaces than those characteristic of RO. As a result, these chemical technologies provide only minimal protection against membrane fouling and, in some cases, may aggravate a membrane fouling problem.

Only Professional Water Technologies engineers and synthesizes its own raw material polymers and final products specifically for use in RO systems. As the following graphs indicate, the result is better control over feedwater chemistry, less membrane cleaning, better operating efficiency, and lower system operating costs.
950 GPM Municipal RO System
The following data are from a 950 GPM municipal RO system in the Eastern U.S. which initially used a straight-chain homopolymer type antiscalant (Jan-July, 2001) and switched to a dendrimer-based antiscalant (Aug-April, 2002). Baseline delta-pressures were reduced by 15% and cleaning frequency was reduced by five times. Further, due to a system excursion causing a higher recovery rate, the plant was inadvertently operated with a 33% higher permeate water flow rate. However, during this time, DP's remained steady and no significant scaling appeared on the membranes.
520 GPM RO System
The following data are from a 520 gpm RO system in Texas. The plant was initially pretreated with a leading scale inhibitor, then switched to a PWT antiscalant on 4/6. As a result, the system was stabilized and membrane cleaning requirements decreased by 600%.
100 GPM RO System
The following data are from a 100 gpm RO system in Louisiana. On 1/8, operators discontinued use of a well known specialty chemical scale inhibitor and began dosing SpectraGuard.
